This book is a must if you are adopted or are going to adopt
This book helped with my understanding of adopted children. As an adopted child I was able to understand the feelings I have been feeling all my life. it opened up communication with me and my parents. I would truly recommend this book to all people.

Indispensable help for anyone adopting an older child...
I almost did not buy this book after reading a review that it was "too clinical." Thank heaven I went for it anyway. It was SO interesting and SO helpful, it has inspired me to write my first book review here on Amazon. I have read every book I can get my hands on since I adopted a 4-year-old from another country and this was by far the most useful to me. While it also covers adoption of infants and domestic adoption, Van Gulden delves deeply into adoption of older (more than a year old), international/interracial children and the issues they face. I especially like how - after each chapter - she gives a list of other resources/books to consult for more information. There are great suggestions of children's books that will help you approach most any difficult topic that can - and will - come up with your new child. I am back here shopping for more copies tonight - get a copy for grandma/grandpa and anyone else close to you who may need a little education on the unique...

Real Authors with Real Great Advice!
Real Parents, Real Children has been one of the most helpful books I have read on adoption, and as an adoption social worker - I have read quite a few! What I enjoyed most about this book was the in-depth look Holly Van Gulden and Lisa M. Bartels-Rabb took at each developmental stage in a child's life. After learning what all children go through at a particular stage, Van Gulden and Bartels-Rabb then discuss issues that may arise in each stage as related to adotpion. This book is a great resource for adoptive parents to determine if their child's behavior is due to their developmental stage or and adoption issue that needs to be resolved. Van Gulden and Bartels-Rabb do not end there! They go on to give practical advice on how to help your child through a tough issue. I appreciate this books honest and professional flavor. I recommend this book to all adoptive parents as a resource that can be used for many years. The earlier adoption related issues can be dicovered and...

Hundreds of pages of moral support
I was fortunate enough to be able to get a copy of Easy to Love but Hard to Raise a little early. Having a daughter who has been diagnosed in the last year with ADHD, ODD and anxiety disorder has definitely made me feel quite alone in the world of parenting. My friends with neuro-typical kids don't face the same challenges, and many family and friends still subscribe to the stigma of over-diagnosed ADHD and medication. The stories in this book are from real parents who have faced real challenges, but love their kids with every ounce of their being. These stories make me laugh, they make me cry, they make me proud of these kids and for some who have grown, the things they've been able to accomplish in their lives.Since my daughter's diagnosis, some things have gotten easier in our house, while new challenges present themselves all the time. When I need a few minutes to reset my brain and gain a little perspective, I know I can turn to Easy to Love but Hard to...

I also belong to a 'mom's of kids with special needs support group' and would love to have this at one of our get togethers.Come on Kindle version!!!!!! :)

A Saving Grace Book
This book has been my saving grace lately. When I feel alone in dealing with my child's diagnosis, I pick up this book for an ounce of support in an otherwise nutty day. In my community, few seem to have much knowledge or even awareness of Sensory Processing Disorder. My daughter is a "sensory seeker" and has a hard time staying still and using self-regulation skills. She also has some trauma after a dog bite when she was two, so the SPD compounded by the trauma causes her sensitive system to go from 0-60 in a split second, depending on the trigger, how tired she is, if she needs food, etc. She has become increasingly frustrated over not being understood, so she struggles with self-control and keeping her explosive outbursts in check. Socially, she is seen as "different", so she is sensitive to rejection. BUT...other than her dad and I, few see or "get" what has led up to her frustration. Besides occupational therapists, few are skilled at truly understanding SPD (soon to be...

Product Description

If there's anything the 32 parent-writers and 15 experts of Easy to Love but Hard to Raise want you to know, it's this:

YOU ARE NOT ALONE We've been there. We've done that. We've navigated the system. Some of us succeeded. Some failed. We've been judged by friends, teachers, family, & strangers. We've gotten the phone calls & the looks. We've done things we never thought we'd do, good & bad. We've been up nights, cried in our pillows, and screamed in frustration. We've doubted ourselves, our children, & our partners. We've had to educate everyone, including our children's doctors. We are parents of children with alphabet soup diagnoses, invisible special needs, behavioral problems.

Our children are easy to love, but oh, so hard to raise.

Easy to Love but Hard to Raise is an anthology of personal essays written by parents of children with ADD, ADHD, OCD, PDD, ASDs, SPD, PBD and/or other alphabet soup diagnoses that takes the already difficult job of parenting and adds to the challenge.

These essays focus on honest feelings, lessons learned, epiphanies, commonplace and extraordinary experiences. They are written by parents of toddlers, young children, teens, and adult children; those who are in the parenting trenches now, and those looking back on their parenting experiences. Topics include : how children came to be diagnosed, the experience of dealing with problem behaviors in various contexts and settings, experiences with/feelings about treatment (therapies, medications, alternative treatments), school (and other advocacy) experiences, children's social interactions/friends, and the effect of parenting a difficult child on a parent's emotional and physical health, marriage, and other relationships. Parenting on Track
This is a great complement to the Parenting on Track program. It takes a lot of practice to effectively implement Vicki's strategies at home and it is so helpful to hear how others have approached the same obstacles we have experienced with our kids. This program has completely changed our lives. We still have a LOT of work to do, but everyday we learn and grow. Thank you Vicki!! Your wisdom and encouragement is priceless.

Finally, there's hope!
I have tried many different parenting programs in the past and I ended up doing more damage than good. Vicki's approach makes so much more sense for the long term. Parenting on Track is the ideal program for me because I am no longer using band aids to try to fix my kids, I am learning exactly what motivates each individual child and doing the hard work that is necessary to have the family of my dreams. Not just a functioning family but deep, meaningful relationships with my children that will continue to grow for a lifetime. Even during my most difficult parenting moments, I am inspired because I finally understand that I have the power to raise these incredible human beings.

Great overview of the program that really shows how and why it works. Reading other peoples experiences that are easy to relate to provided great strategies to apply to my family. A steal at this price!

Great little cheap mini-cam unit
I picked this unit after much research, for a home-made robot (class project). Here's the scoop:For the price, it's fantastic!Performance: Our best results, with a fresh battery, camera unit transmitted ~200' of open parking lot AND ~75' of industrial building w/ lots of flouro/wifi etc. with minimal interference. However, signal strength fell off with batt pwr. Unfortunately, we used a variety of 9Vs at various stages of use or I'd have a lifespan for you. Best guesstimate is minimum 30 minutes full strength from fresh batt.We also played around with it indoors, with the AC adapters on both units.Either way, you'll occasionally have to tweak the RX tuner for best reception if the camera is mobile, or the environment changes (body blocking the antenna of the Tx etc.) See that little knob by the Rx unit's antenna? That's the tuning knob. How does it work?Camera unit powered by AC adapter, or 9V battery (short life as...

Works pretty good
For the money, this is a great little system. Easy, out of the box setup, nothing to it. Video was surprisingly good. I checked it out on two different TV's. One is an older 36" CRT Panasonic, the other a 32" LCD Sharp. No interference from the interior of the home was detected. (You know, it transmits through walls, ect..) Got this to keep an eye on the teenagers still living at home. Man, they are going to think I have a 6th sense! The audio works great too. Wish I would have bought a larger multi-camera system. In fact I am considering that now for other projects. For under $40 bucks, I don't think you can go wrong. Don't expect Hi Def, but it really is quite good.

Good value for a basic system
I bought this setup for birding. Installation was a breeze. One bit of confusion was the manual which stated the power adapters for the camera and transmitter should not be interchanged and could damage the equipment if hooked up wrong; however, the adapters were identical. I installed everything and had it working in less than 10 minutes. There is some interference as others have pointed out, i.e., occasional lines and jitters, but all in all a very good color picture for the price. I do not see a problem with low light conditions - I have a robin who built a nest under my deck, and was hoping to watch the babies hatch. Today they did within half an hour of my installation of the camera. The camera is tucked up underneath the joists and there is no direct sunlight, yet the picture is clear and bright. This may not hold true for dusk, but for use in normal daylight, I'd highly recommend this system if you're on a tight budget. I couldn't ask for more considering cost/performance...
