Great Book - Great Presentation - Directors Should Purchase
This book is outstanding! For years I have used the techniques presented in this book. There is no question about it, the techniques presented here will help your group improve and grow.I have used this book in Japan with the groups that I work with and every time I do, they always sound better and play better. It is interesting to see how the Japanese conductors use and re-use the material presented. There are so few outstanding books on this topic that this book truly rises to the top. You can employ the techniques in this book at all levels, early, middle, advanced and pro. After you try it you'll see what I mean. My middle school kids love the challenge and the semi-pro's in Japan I work with love it as well! It is both intellectually stimulating and fun.Along with this book, I suggest buying the performer copies and video. Take some time to really understand the way Lisk presents the information and then work the techniques into your...

Great creative rehearsal techniques
This is a great book for bringing focus into every rehearsal. I use it every day with my high school concert band. It has helped each individual play with more confidence by not always having to rely on stronger players. It has helped them listen to each other and really think for themselves. It offers concrete ideas for improving dynamics, rhythm, intonation, tone quality, blend, articulation, and scales using endless creative methods that can be applied to specific pieces we are working on. The students learn to listen to each other and play as a group. This is the most useful book I have ever read on this topic. It is an excellent book I highly recommend to every conductor.

    Product Description

This book is a highly informative, highly entertaining introduction to what art direction is and what art directors do. Written by two of the world's leading experts on the subject, it covers the role of art director in numerous environments, including magazines and newspapers, advertising, corporate identity, museums, and publishing. It also provides an insight into what makes a successful art director, what an art director actually does all day, what makes things go right, and what makes things go wrong.

Alongside perspectives on typography, illustration, and photography, there are case studies of successful art direction in different spheres, from McSweeney's to Vier5's web design. The authors have also invited pre-eminent international art directors to interpret their roles in special sections of the book that they have art directed themselves. The result is an impressive, enlightening, and often very funny diversity of perspectives and approaches.

Clearly written, including a glossary of handy art director sayings, an "art director test," and more, Art Direction Explained, At Last! will provide students with insights into the world of art direction and professionals with a perceptive overview of their profession. Top to learn more

If you can get it in the library, but don't buy it
This is one of those books you would waste your money buying it. I did and I wish I didn't. The authors just explain how they got into the business (by accident), some of their experiences and what they've learned. I'm studying advertisement, and I don't feel it really added anything for me. Don't buy it, you most likely won't read it twice.

    Great content Poor Art Direction
Heller is an amazing writer, you just can't go wrong with his work. The only problem I have is the art direction/design of this book. For a book on art direction it feels rather dated, 2002-2005. It was a bit difficult reading it with so much novelty design presented, I would have been happy with some nice swiss design, you can't go wrong with that. This book is filled with a vast amount of knowledge and discussions that make it a must buy for any student, art director or even designer that wishes to know more. This is a great read. Good job yet again Mr. Heller and Veronique Vienne. You managed to write a book that covers all bases, especially for editorial.

    Fantastic concept, fascinating read
This book falls into the category of, "Why didn't anyone think of this before?" Griffin and Morrison asked rock stars of the advertising industry to draw the process of how they come up with the ideas that influence popular culture through advertising. It's incredible to see how so many exceptionally creative people think, and it's nothing short of amazing that they can conceptualize the process for us in pictures. The authors' analysis of the process behind creativity is thought-provoking and inspiring.A great read for anyone who's in the advertising field or studying advertising as a major, but also entertaining and informative for the intelligent layperson.I predict that this book will be talked about for years to come and will establish itself as a staple of advertising education.

Creative directors, art directors and advertising copywriters are some of the great artists and thinkers of our time. Considering the scope and power of their influence in our culture, that's not such a crazy idea.

You'll find outstanding work from an eclectic mix of agencies, including TBWA\CHIAT\DAY, The Jupiter Drawing Room, Wieden+Kennedy, McGarryBowen, McCann Erickson, Ogilvy & Mather, Carmichael Lynch and 72andSunny.

    Beautiful and surprisingly unoriginal
I just finished reading this book from front to back. It was very interesting and a lot of fun.One thing you'll learn is that the creative process, as described by James Webb Young in his 1965 book A Technique for Producing Ideas, is the same for all the people who contributed to The Creative Process Illustrated. They all just quote Young in illustrated format, using fish or networks or ink blots, and some of them don't even seem aware that they're using Young's technique at all. This was probably the most profound insight in this book.In short, The Creative Process Illustrated is the long scenic route through Young's technique. Young's book is the shortcut. Some people like long, scenic drives, and others don't. If you're in doubt, get both books and go from there.

    Love it!
I love this book. You can see how different a creative mind thinks compared to another. There's an irreverent and very human side of the designers revealed through their sketches/notes/explanations of the creative process, and you can tell by the cover. The only thing I don't love about this book is its size. The pages are too large and I cannot carry it around without bending its corners. Other than that, it is an excellent book. If you're looking for a more serious, text-only book I recommend Millman's .

Excellent book, extremely detailed, great read...
The first thing I did when I decided to make my feature film was to bring in a DP. Mike was a guy I worked with backstage on some musicals and a guy I knew who was a hard worker, easy to get a long with, didn't put up with crap and someone that I could trust. I also had a chance to work with a guy who had professional lights, professional equipment and was willing to "help out." Though this other guy was available, I went with Mike because I had relationship with him. And I'll be honest with you: He taught me more than I realize.Ms. Frost book is about those relationships. Those "getting on the same page" moments that define the film-making process. When you think about it - you need to have EVERYONE on the same page - from the sound guy, to the actor, to the home owner whose home you're abusing in the process of making your film. What Ms. Frost does in her extremely detailed book - is give the director all the tools he or she needs to find that common...

The history of film shows that this collaboration is the single best way to get the highest production value for any film. Absolutely essential information!Although Cinematography for Directors is clearly written for professionals by a professional, Frost's explanations apply directly to low-budget films.Any filmmaker--including documentary--can usefully use...

    A Real Insider's View
A revealing and instructive exploration of the delicate dance which inevitably takes place between cinematographer and director, greatly enriched by the inclusion of interviews with top cinematographers. Frost sheds much needed light on the rather mysterious issue of what a cinematographer actually does. Hint: it's more than just look through the camera- much more! Fascinating sections on such subjects as the colour palette of film, lighting for genre and the inside story of how to achieve "The Look" leave the reader vastly more educated about this key craft. This book will ease the trepidation of the first time director with tons of detailed technical information, nicely broken down into easily digestible chunks and lots of insight into how the technical can be applied toward better communication. At the same time, it will deepen the knowledge base of the experienced director leading to a better collaborative process. Without question, a real gem.
